Pearl Harbor survivor to address Aero
Club

Lambert Modder, a Navy corpsman who survived the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 will be guest speaker at the Sun Lakes Aero Club meeting Monday, March 21 at the Sun Lakes Country Club. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with coffee and camaraderie, followed by Modder’s presentation at 7 p.m. The public is invited.
Modder joined the Navy on Jan. 3, 1941. After boot camp at the Great lakes Naval Station near Chicago, he was shipped to Pearl Harbor, where he was assigned to the Naval Hospital. He recalls returning from liberty on the morning of Dec. 7 to the shocking roar of airplanes. Like many at Pearl Harbor, he thought the attack was just a drill, but soon discovered it was for real when bombs began falling and buildings started exploding.
His first assignment during the attack was to identify bodies of sailors who had been killed and pulled from the canal. Some had dog tags and some didn’t, and my job was to put an ID on them and stack them up like a cord of wood, he recalls. Many of the sailors were from the USS Arizona.
He did that for six hours, and it didn’t bother him a bit, but now he can hardly stand to watch a chicken be butchered because of the blood.
