Thunderbirds pilot to address… Aero Club gathering .

A retired U.S. Air Force pilot who once lead the USAF Thunderbirds precision flying team will be guest speaker at the Sun Lakes Aero Club (SLAC) gathering February 17 at the Sun Lakes Country Club.  The public is invited to attend.

Col. Roger Parrish will give a power-point presentation describing his experiences leading the five-aircraft team between 1973 and 1974. Based at Nellis AFB outside Las Vegas, the team performed 105 airshows flying F4 Phantom jets in 1973 and 43 shows performing in T38 aircraft in 1974.

“I preferred flying the Phantom, but we were forced to switch from Phantoms to T-38s because of the energy crisis,” he said.  “One Phantom burned as much fuel as four T38s during each performance.”

Col. Parrish also flew 132 combat missions in Phantom jets during the Viet Nam crisis.  He also flew F-100, F-104 and F-105 aircraft.

After retiring from active duty in 1983, he served as director of training for American West airlines and also worked for Learjet. He was inducted into the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame in 2007.

SLAC sponsors programs the third Monday of the month November through April in the Sun Lakes Country Club Mirror Room. The public is invited to attend all gatherings.  Additional information is available on the club’s web site, d not appear becSunLakesAeroClub.org, or by calling Bob Walch at 895-8869 or Gary Vacin at 298-7017 or gvacin@hotmail.com.
