Question: I
recently visited my family doctor for an annual exam, and he was a bit
concerned with my blood pressure. He suggested I consider taking a medication
to keep it under control. What is the maximum blood pressure that the FAA
allows?
Answer: Your
aviation medical examiner (AME) can issue any class of medical certificate if
the average blood pressure while sitting does not exceed 155 systolic over 95
diastolic. If you will be reporting the use of blood pressure medication for
the first time on your next medical application,
you will need to have completed a hypertension
evaluation before you see your AME. Your treating physician can perform
this evaluation and order any additional testing. Bring the completed
evaluation to the AME when you have your next aviation medical exam. As long as
you are found otherwise qualified to hold the class of FAA medical you are
applying for, and the evaluation shows that your blood pressure is well
controlled, the AME may issue your medical certificate to you at the time of
the physical examination.
