Question: After completing a flight the other day, I decided
to take a walk along the ramp to look at some of the other aircraft. I was
approached by a local police officer who asked if I was a pilot and wanted
identification to prove that I was. After showing the officer my pilot
certificate, I was curious to know if I was required to do so. Is there a FAA
regulation that covers this?
Answer: Yes. FAR
61.3(l) outlines which authorities are allowed to request the presentation and
inspection of your certificate. The FAA administrator, NTSB representatives,
law enforcement officers, and TSA representatives have the authority to review
your pilot credentials. However, it is important to note that this provision
does not allow a police officer the right to confiscate your certificate.
Additionally, the authorities also have the right, upon reasonable request, to review
your medical certificate and/or pilot logbook.
