The minutes of the November 20, 2007 Board Minutes were approved without reading.

Treasurer’s Report

Vern Nelson reported that there was $311.92 in the Bank Account.

Activities Report:

Bob Walch reported that Harold Thomas has agreed to join the Board and act as the Chairman of the Activities Committee and Bob Walch appointed him as the Activities Director and Chairman of the Committee.  Bob said he would inform Harold that members Dick Vaughn, Stuart Schulz and Penny LaVerne are interested in becoming Activities Committee members.

Bob said he and Al had proposed several fly-in destinations for 2008 and he would pass the information on to Harold. There was some discussion concerning having one monthly fly-in or two.  Bob suggested one scheduled and use the Scottsdale Breakfast Club as backup

Gary Vacin said he would investigate a Field Trip/Fly-in to visit a firm at the Casa Grande Airport that does refurbishing of WWII aircraft, and report to Bob Walch.

Programs Report:

Bob Walch indicated the Program Directors position was vacant because Elton Dyal had indicated he did not want to be Chairman next year.  Bob suggested that since the speakers for December, 2007 through March, 2008 have been determined that the Board members could probably continue its search for speakers through May, 2008 and thus there was no immediate need to fill the vacancy.

Bob Walch reported that the following speakers have been lined up for January through March:

  1. December 19th   Member Tom Malthaner will present a short history of aviation and how it helped win WWII.
  2. January 21st     Preston Westmoreland, talk show host, will speak on aviation
  3. February 18th   Patricia Parks, member of the Flying Samaritans
  4. March 17th       Bob Newcomer will speak on his aviation experiences during WWII

Provost Report:

Vern Nelson suggested that since Gary Vacin, Provost was responsible for setting up the meeting room and that member Ben Thompson is keeping the Karaoke and Computer Video Equipment and is setting them up for the meetings when required, that Ben should be a member of the Provost Committee.  Gary said he thought that was a good idea however he would just work closely with Ben and not set up a Committee.

Publicity Report:

Gary Vacin, Publicity Director, reported that he had gone on an extended visit to Peru and was unable to produce any publicity for the club in time for publication in the January 1, 2008 Splash.  Material for the Splash must be in their hands by the 12th of the month.  Gary indicated the Arizona Republic was interested in Gary’s writing articles for them and he said he would be working with Tom Malthaner, Secretary, to develop an interesting bio on Tom and indicate in the article that Tom has over 320 model planes which he would like to donate to a museum.

Webmaster Report:

Vern Nelson, Webmaster said there was nothing new to report except he would be publishing an article on the progress of the development of the Kodiak Plane in the December 31st issue of the SLAC Update.  Bill Johnson said he would be getting together in early 2008 for training on the maintenance of the website in the event Vern was unable to carry on..

Old Business:

New simpler Club Guidelines were developed by Vern Nelson, Bob Walch and Al Galvi to replace the existing By-laws.and the merits of the new Guidelines were discussed.  Vern answered a number of inquiries concerning them and they were subsequently approved by the Board.  President Bob Walch had emailed them to the membership, informing them they would be requested to vote on adopting them at the December 19th annual meeting of the Membership.

New Business:

Bob Walch had “Timing for a fund drive from the members” on the agenda.  Vern Nelson reported that a basket would be at the Provost’s table at each meeting for the collection of $2.00 from each member attending the meeting to defray the cost of the meeting room and gifts to the speakers.  The cost at the present time is $55 per meeting and there has been an average of about 28 members attending the last 7 meetings.  Vern read a proposed mailing to the members around January 1st soliciting voluntary contributions from the members to cover other annual expense and potential equipment purchases.  He reported that expenses for 2008 (including a possible purchase of another wireless microphone for about $200) are expected to run about $800+.  This amount includes the cost of the room outlined above which is $440 per year.  Bob Walch said that if the bank account fell below a comfortable level the club would issue another appeal for contributions from the members.

Report on the Scottsdale Breakfast Club.

Bob Walch reported that he flew Ben Thompson and Vern Nelson to Parker, AZ to attend the Breakfast meeting of the Scottsdale Breakfast Club and were well received by the SBC members.  It was suggested that the new Activities Director, Harold Thomas should be supplied with information about SBC so he and his committee could research the possibility of how SLAC may take advantage of SBC’s offer to have our pilots become members.  There was some concern about keeping SLAC’s identity in these events.  SBC holds these events on the second Saturday of each month and pre schedules them in November for the following year.

There being no further business brought before the Board the meeting adjourned at 10:45 a m.

Respectfully submitted,

Tom Malthaner, Secretary
